Fiberglass is widely regarded as safe.

People who are exposed to fiberglass dust are told that it clears from the lungs naturally.

But, an interesting article from 1992 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1419860/

My experience. I’ve smoked off and on for many years but never had serious shortness of breath until very recently, and it began abruptly with a range of other symptoms.

I bought a house in 2021 and added lots of loose batts of fiberglass without isolating them from the interior air as is usually done. A person is exposed to a lot of fiberglass dust in this house, supposedly safe dust.

If a person looks at responses to the cited article https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1419860/ they will notice what appears to be an organized effort by “fiberglass industry” interests to discredit the conclusions of the study.

The challenges raised are largely worthless but are presented so skillfully that the net effect was to bury the study.

One of the silliest challenges is that the study was biased towards rural residents of Michigan https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1061302/ An absurd twist in logic that could be used to discredit any study because it includes whoever is included.

Today it is routine for workers to wear masks, and it is mostly that which prevents fiberglass being considered toxic. If masks had been routine in the times of asbestos it probably would have lasted.
